You may have A person for the job, but is it the RIGHT person for the job?

After touching on area of Equal Employment last week, I thought it was definitely worth looking at the importance of the Recruitment and Selection overall. In an article by news.com.au, job advertisements have risen recently, suggesting the growth of the Australian economy and highlighting the need for correct recruitment and selection procedures by businesses.

The number of jobs advertised online and in newspapers has risen for the 12th month in a row. Total job advertisements on the internet and in newspapers increased one per cent in April to be 20.5 per cent more than the same month in 2010, in a survey conducted by ANZ bank. Overall job advertisements continued to grow in April, after rising 1.3 per cent in March, suggesting the local economy continued to create jobs, despite the diverse rates of economic activity by region and by sector, he said.

Head of Australian economics and property research Ivan Colhoun explains; "Advertising has slowed in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT, and broadly strengthened in Queensland (in spite of the floods) and the Northern Territory". "In Western Australia, advertising has slowed a little in recent months from very strong rates of growth in the second half of 2010 and early 2011, but remains above national average growth rates."

QUESTIONS:
1) Why is it important for businesses to choose the most appropriate person for the job? What might businesses do to minimise failing to hire the most suitable applicant?
2) What may business do to improve the motivation of existing employees? Where does the retaining of employees come in the employment cycle?
